HURRICANE

Preparing for a hurricane

 

Hurricane watch  

 

ü        Check emergency supplies.

ü        Fuel car.

ü        Bring in outdoor objects and anchor objects that cannot be brought inside.

ü        Secure buildings by closing and boarding up windows. Remove outside antennas.

ü        Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings. Open only when absolutely necessary and close quickly.

ü        Store drinking water in clean bathtubs, jugs, bottles, and cooking utensils.

ü        Review evacuation plan.

 

Hurricane warning

 

ü        Listen constantly to a battery-operated radio for official instructions.

ü        Store valuables and personal papers in a waterproof container.

If you are staying at home:

ü        Stay inside, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.

ü        Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.

ü        If power is lost, turn off major appliances to reduce power "surge" when electricity is restored.

If evacuation is necessary:

ü        Leave as soon as possible.

ü        Secure your home by unplugging appliances and turning off electricity and the main water valve.

ü        Tell someone outside of the storm area where you are going.

ü        If time permits, and you live in an identified surge or flood zone, elevate furniture to protect it from flooding or better yet, move it to a higher floor.

ü        Bring pre-assembled emergency supplies kit and warm protective clothing.

ü        Take blankets and sleeping bags to shelter.

ü        Lock up home and leave.

 

Going to an emergency shelter?

 

Assemble before hand the items you need in an evacuation.  Store these items in an easy-to-carry bag in a convenient place known to all family members.

 

If you feel unsafe in your home or your area is prone to severe flooding you will need to evacuate and seek shelter with neighbours or friends or go to an emergency shelter. 

 

Make a note of where you will seek shelter and ensure everyone in your family knows the location.

 

Supplies to take with you ?

  

  •  A 3-day supply of water.

 

  • A 3-day supply of non-perishables packaged or canned food and a non-electric can opener.

 

  • A complete change of clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes.

 

  • Sanitation supplies.

 

  • Blankets and sleeping bags.

 

  • A first aid kit which includes your prescription medication.

 

  • A battery-powered radio, flashlights and extra batteries.

 

  • Special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members.

 

  • Games and books

 

  • Cash

 

  • Identification (Passport, Voters ID, etc.)

 

Remember: Pets are not allowed at shelters, you will need to make arrangements for the safety of your pets.

 

General

 

v      The Manager is entitled to call upon any occupant of the shelter to assist in its operation and every occupant is expected to cooperate to the best of his/her ability.

v      The Shelter Manager and members of the shelter management team are forbidden to accept responsibility for any item of personal property of any shelter occupant.

v      The use of violence, profane language and illegal drugs will result in prosecution where any such offence is contrary to the law.

v      The use of alcoholic beverages and drunkenness will not be permitted.

Open flames or cooking will not be permitted within the shelter, except in specially designated areas, and such areas may only be used with the
authorization of shelter management personnel.

v      All occupants using the facilities of an emergency shelter must be registered with that centre.

 

Law and Order

 

v      Safety and Security personnel will be responsible for the maintenance of law and order in all shelters.

v      All existing laws of GRENADA will be enforced.

v      Shelterees shall use the shelter areas as assigned by the shelter manager.

v      Personal conflicts shall be resolved by shelter group leaders if possible.

v      Minor violations, such as loud noise at night shall be handled by group leaders.

Serious violations shall be dealt with quickly and forcefully by the shelter authority

 

Health and Sanitation

 

v      Shelterees with contagious disease shall be isolated immediately.

v      Shelter floors and yard area shall be swept free of waste materials.

v      Sleeping and rest room areas shall be kept clean and tidy at all times.

v      Waste containers shall be disposed of as soon as filled.

v      Personal hygiene must be observed.

v     No pets will be allowed inside the shelter.

The shelter environment shall remain clean and sanitary at all times.

 

Safety and Fire

 

v      No dangerous weapons, liquids, or other safety hazards shall be kept by shelterees.

v      For safety and health reasons smoking will not be permitted inside the shelter.

v      Smokers may smoke outside of the shelter only.

v     Arms and ammunition, and other forms of weaponry will not be allowed in the shelter.
